Effective teamwork is at the heart of any successful organisation: a powerful tool for helping you achieve this is the Insights Discovery Wheel. Understanding and leveraging the behavioural preferences of team members is vital.

In this post, we’ll break down the Insights Discovery wheel and how it can be applied to foster teamwork and improve productivity.

Team Meeting – 10 minute Colour Conversations

Purpose

To remind the team about their Insights Discovery Team Wheel and to set the intention for effective collaboration during the meeting.

Agenda

Here is a suggested 10min exercise.

1. Intro & Purpose (1 minute)

Let the team know you’re sharing the Team Wheel to remind everyone of each other’s preferences.  Emphasise the importance of showing up with emotional intelligence to facilitate good conversations where everyone feels heard.

2. Team Wheel Overview (2 minutes)

Show the team wheel (printed or on screen).

Ask one or all of these questions:

  • What strengths do we have as a team? Are there any areas that might be lacking?
  • Looking at today’s meeting, how could we make the most of the colour preferences that are less represented on the wheel?
  • Are there any areas where we might clash or work well together, based on our positions on the wheel?

3. Colour Group Reflection (3 minutes)

Split into small colour groups (or reflect individually if the team is small).

Encourage team members to jot down or discuss:

  • One simple behaviour from others that helps them contribute at their best today
  • One behaviour that risks shutting them down or throw them off balance

4. Discussion (3 minutes)

Each colour group shares:

  • One “do”
  • One “don’t”

Capture the requests on a flipchart or whiteboard.

Optional Flipchart Headings

  • Red energy: Be bold / Don’t bulldoze
  • Blue energy: Be clear / Don’t rush
  • Green energy: Be kind / Don’t dismiss
  • Yellow energy: Be open / Don’t dominate

5. Team Intention (1 minute)

To conclude, ask:

  • What’s one thing we can each do for this meeting to help the team work well together?

Insights Discovery Wheel and Team Dynamics

Understanding your team’s position on the Insights Discovery Wheel is vital for successful teamwork. This system reveals how your team members fit together and how to appreciate their differences and similarities.

Team Application:

Recognising the different positions on the wheel can bring unique strengths to your team. Embrace these differences to create a well-rounded and high-performing team. Understanding how team members’ positions influence their interactions can help resolve conflicts and foster a more harmonious work environment.
