Who We Work With

Earth Green is one of the four colour energies in Insights Discovery®, alongside Fiery Red, Sunshine Yellow and Cool Blue.

Someone with a strong preference for Earth Green energy may bring care, patience and a real talent for building relationships. They often notice how a decision will feel for the people who have to live with it.

At Juicing The Lemon, we sometimes describe Earth Green energy as the engine oil of an organisation: the steady, people-focused contribution that helps relationships, trust and collaboration run smoothly and keeps a team working well, especially when things get difficult.

What Earth Green energy looks like on a good day

On a good day, someone leading with Earth Green energy can be encouraging, caring, sharing, patient and relaxed.

They are often excellent listeners: the colleague people go to when they need to talk something through. They may be particularly good at noticing when someone is uncomfortable, slowing a conversation down and helping people feel heard.

Angela Mitchell, our founder,

often describes Earth Green energy as having a one-to-one strength, in contrast to the one-to-many strength often associated with Sunshine Yellow energy.

People drawing strongly on Earth Green energy may flourish in one-to-one conversations or smaller groups, where there is time to listen properly, understand what matters to someone and build trust. Their network may be smaller than that of a highly Sunshine Yellow colleague, but the relationships can often be deep and long-lasting.

Neither is better; they are simply different ways of connecting with people.

On leadership teams, Earth Green energy can also play an important role in testing whether a plan that makes sense on paper will actually work for the people who need to deliver it.

Over many years of working with leadership teams, Angela has noticed that where Earth Green energy is well represented, conversations often include more attention to questions such as:

How will this land with our people? What support will they need? What are we not hearing yet?

That does not mean Earth Green energy is responsible for engagement on its own. It is simply one of the contributions we regularly see it bring into the room.

How Earth Green energy shows up in our workshops

In our workshops, we like to bring the colour energies to life with familiar examples.

Earth Green energy is often the person at the pub who notices someone arriving on their own and goes to find them a chair.

In the lift, they may be the one holding the door and checking that everyone has got in.

By email, it might be the friendly opener asking how your weekend went before moving on to the task.

We also hear a recurring workplace example. In a busy meeting, someone drawing strongly on Earth Green energy may have a genuine concern about a decision but not immediately push themselves into the conversation. They listen, weigh up the impact and sometimes wait to see whether someone else raises it first.

One of the useful 5% flexes we explore is saying the concern earlier.

Rather than waiting until after the meeting to say, “I wasn’t really comfortable with that decision”, the flex might be:

“Can I just raise something before we move on? I’m concerned about how this is going to land with the team.”

The care has not disappeared. It has simply been paired with more challenge.

That is a pattern we see regularly in our workshops.

Earth Green does not mean lacking drive

Earth Green energy can sometimes be mistaken for a lack of ambition, confidence or commercial edge.

We think that is a mistake.

Care and commercial rigour are not opposites.

Angela spent 17 years in FMCG sales, often working in teams where Fiery Red energy was highly visible, while her own lead energy is Earth Green.

For many years she flexed her style to fit the environment because that seemed to be what was rewarded. Insights Discovery helped her recognise that she did not need to become more Fiery Red in order to operate with authority.

Her Earth Green preference could bring something equally valuable: strong relationships, careful listening, trust and the ability to understand what mattered to the customer and the people around her.

The goal is not to become someone else. It is to use your own preference with confidence and emotional intelligence.

Where Earth Green energy comes from

Insights Discovery® is a psychometric model informed by Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types, first set out in Psychological Types in 1921.

The four colour energies draw on preferences including Extraversion and Introversion, which relate to how people tend to engage with the world, and Thinking and Feeling, which relate to how people tend to make judgements and decisions.

Earth Green energy reflects a preference associated with Introversion and Feeling. In practice, that may show up as a more reflective, people-focused way of engaging, with particular attention to relationships, values and how decisions affect others.

Introversion here should not be confused with shyness, lack of confidence or an inability to speak up.

As with every colour energy, Earth Green is a preference rather than a fixed type. Everyone uses all four colour energies, and context, experience, role, values and emotional intelligence all influence how those preferences show up.

You can read more about the evidence behind the model on our Validity and Reliability page

Earth Green energy under pressure

Every colour energy has a good day and a bad day.

The question we keep coming back to in our workshops is not whether someone has Earth Green energy, but how well they are using it.

Under pressure, the same care that makes Earth Green energy so valuable can sometimes tip into people-pleasing: agreeing too quickly, over-helping or avoiding a difficult conversation because they do not want to damage the relationship.

Someone drawing heavily on Earth Green energy may dig their heels in, slow down or appear to go along with a decision even when they have significant concerns.

When pace and pressure rise — particularly around strong Fiery Red energy — we sometimes describe what happens as retreating into a metaphorical tortoise shell. The person pulls back, thinks, and may only re-engage once things feel calmer.

That matters because silence can easily be mistaken for agreement.

A pattern we often see: saying yes when the answer is really no

Another pattern we regularly hear in workshops is the Earth Green colleague who becomes the person everyone turns to for help.

They want to be supportive. They do not want to let someone down. So when another request arrives, the answer is often “yes” — even when their workload is already full.

The 5% flex is not to stop being helpful. It is to become more explicit about the trade-off.

Instead of automatically saying yes, they might say:

“I can help with that. I’m already committed to X and Y, so which would you like me to prioritise?”

The relationship is still being protected, but the responsibility for the trade-off is now shared rather than quietly absorbed.

That small change can be very powerful.

Care and Dare

This is where our Care and Dare idea becomes particularly useful.

Care and challenge are not opposites.

On a good day, someone drawing strongly on Earth Green energy can hold another person to account with warmth rather than avoiding the conversation altogether.

The same applies to delegation.

Earth Green leaders may be generous with support. The potential stretch is making sure that support does not quietly become dependence.

A useful question is:

Am I helping this person succeed, or am I stepping in so often that they do not get the chance to own it themselves?

None of this is fixed.

For some people Earth Green is their lead energy. For others, it may be more of a teaspoon than a tablespoon.

Their other colour energies, their role, their experience, their values and their emotional intelligence all shape how it appears.

How to work well with someone who leads with Earth Green energy

At the heart of our approach is the 5% flex: a small, deliberate adjustment to your own style that helps another person stay at their best.

With someone drawing strongly on Earth Green energy, that flex might look like this.

Slow down and leave space

If your own pace is faster — particularly if you lead with Fiery Red or Sunshine Yellow energy — be a little more patient.

When you ask a question, the pause that follows is not necessarily an invitation to fill it with your own answer.

Leave the silence.

You may get a more considered response as a result.

Give notice where you can

Avoid pushing for an instant decision unless there is genuinely a reason it needs to be made immediately.

Give people time to prepare, explain what is changing and keep commitments wherever possible.

Sudden changes of direction or surprises can be particularly difficult for someone who values stability and consideration.

Keep it warm and personal

Communicate warmly and, where practical, personally.

Listen without interrupting and be thoughtful about putting somebody on the spot in front of a group.

Have I created enough space for this person to tell me what they really think?

Then invite their view directly.

Value the help — and share the load

Recognise commitment and reliability, but do not allow somebody’s willingness to help to become an easy way for everyone else to offload work.

Check occasionally whether they are carrying more than their share.

And if you lead someone with a strong Earth Green preference, do not mistake a quiet “yes” for unlimited capacity.

Fiery Red and Earth Green: a pairing we see regularly

Fiery Red and Earth Green sit opposite each other on the Insights Wheel®, and the tension between them comes up regularly in our workshops.

The Fiery Red colleague may want pace, a decision and action.

The Earth Green colleague may want time to think about the impact, make sure people have been heard and avoid rushing past a concern.

Each can easily misread the other.

Fiery Red may see Earth Green as too slow or reluctant to commit.

Earth Green may experience Fiery Red as overly forceful or as moving before everyone is ready.

A useful 5% flex is for both sides to move slightly.

The Fiery Red colleague slows down enough to ask:

“What am I missing here? How is this likely to land?”

The Earth Green colleague practises saying the concern earlier and more directly:

“I understand why we want to move quickly. I do have a concern that I think we need to hear before we decide.”

Neither person has to become more like the other.

They simply make a small adjustment so both contributions have a better chance of being heard.

Treat all of this as a useful starting hypothesis rather than a label.

Try the flex, notice how the person responds and adjust.

The person matters more than the colour energy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the strengths and possible blind spots of someone with strong Earth Green energy?

Someone with a strong Earth Green preference may bring empathy, patience, careful listening, loyalty and a talent for building trust.

They can also be particularly good at noticing how plans and decisions will affect the people involved.

The same strengths can become less helpful under pressure. Care can become people-pleasing, patience can become reluctance to push for action, and a desire for harmony can make it tempting to hold back a difficult message.

At Juicing The Lemon, we focus less on whether someone has strong Earth Green energy and more on how well they are using it.

Slow your pace a little, give them time to think and avoid creating unnecessary surprises.

Listen properly, keep commitments and invite their view rather than assuming that silence means agreement.

Warmth matters too.

Someone drawing strongly on Earth Green energy may respond particularly well when they can see that the relationship matters as well as the task.

As with all of the colour energies, treat this as a starting hypothesis and notice how the individual actually responds.

Not necessarily.

Someone drawing strongly on Earth Green energy may prefer disagreement to be handled calmly and respectfully.

Under pressure, that preference for harmony can sometimes tip into avoiding a difficult conversation or delaying challenge until later.

But strong Earth Green leadership is not about avoiding challenge.

At its best, it can combine care and dare: being thoughtful about the person while still being clear about what needs to change.

No.

Earth Green energy is associated with Introversion in the Insights Discovery model, but introversion should not be confused with shyness or lack of confidence.

Someone may prefer time to think, smaller group conversations or one-to-one interaction and still be highly confident, influential and willing to challenge.

Equally, someone can be very sociable and still lack confidence in a particular situation.

Colour energy tells us something about preference; it does not tell us how confident someone is.

No.

A preference for Earth Green energy does not tell us how ambitious, capable or commercially minded someone is.

Someone may pursue results through relationships, trust and understanding rather than through highly visible competition or assertiveness.

Angela’s own experience in FMCG sales is a useful example. Her lead preference is Earth Green, but that did not stop her succeeding in a demanding commercial environment.

Different colour energies may simply express drive in different ways.

Absolutely.

There is no single colour energy associated with good leadership.

Earth Green energy can bring trust, consistency, strong relationships, careful listening and sensitivity to how decisions affect people.

Those qualities can be particularly valuable when a team is under pressure or going through change.

The potential stretch is making sure care does not become avoidance of challenge, and support does not become doing too much for other people.

As with every colour energy, effective leadership comes from self-awareness, emotional intelligence and the ability to flex.

Someone drawing strongly on Earth Green energy may want time to understand why the change is happening, how it will affect people and what support will be available.

They may not always voice concerns immediately.

That can make it tempting to assume they are comfortable with the change when they may still be processing it.

In our workshops, we encourage leaders to invite their view directly and give enough time for an honest answer.

Involving them early and explaining what will stay stable as well as what will change can also help.

Earth Green energy never operates in isolation.

Someone leading with Earth Green and drawing strongly on Sunshine Yellow may combine deep relationship-building with a more visible, sociable style.

With Cool Blue more available, their care for people may be accompanied by greater structure and attention to detail.

With Fiery Red energy more available, they may combine empathy with more visible pace and assertiveness.

In our workshops, this is often where people realise why two colleagues who both appear “very Earth Green” can still feel quite different to work with.

No.

Insights Discovery describes behavioural preferences. It does not assess competence, potential or suitability for a particular role.

A strong Earth Green preference does not make someone more suited to caring or people-focused roles, just as it does not make them less suited to leadership, sales, technical or commercial roles.

Insights Discovery should be used to support self-awareness, communication and team effectiveness — not to make hiring or promotion decisions.
